Definition
“Gifted” means students who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment and who are identified under division (A), (B), (C), or (D) of section 3324.03 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Identification
Students in grade 2 and in grade 5 take the state approved tests in reading and math, and state approved tests to assess for superior cognitive ability. Students who score a 115 or higher on the tests will also be screened for creative thinking. Students may also be referred individually for gifted testing. Referrals need to be turned into the Principal of the building where the student attends. After review of the referral by the Principal, the Gifted Coordinator will contact the parent(s) to schedule gifted testing. Students who score at the 95 percentile or higher on a state approved achievement test are identified as gifted in that subject area. Students who receive a 128 or higher on a state approved ability test are identified as superior cognitive.

Services
Johnstown Elementary School
Students who are identified as superior cognitive, gifted in reading and/or math receive gifted service through regular classroom teachers who received training in teaching gifted and talented students.

Johnstown Middle School
Students who are identified as gifted in reading and demonstrate high achievement on district level and/or state tests receive services through placement in Advanced English Language Arts classes in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Similarly, students who are identified as gifted in math and demonstrate high achievement on district level and/or state tests receive services through placement in Advanced Math 6 and Math 7 classes. Students who qualify for the advanced math classes also have the opportunity to accelerate into Algebra 1 as an 8th grade student. Teachers who provide gifted services are trained in teaching students who are gifted.

Johnstown High School- Students identified as superior cognitive and/or gifted in reading, math, science, and social studies are served at the high school through Honors and CCP Courses which are both taught by high school teachers. JHS offers Honors and/or CCP classes in all four subject areas. Honors teachers receive professional development in teaching students who are gifted and talented.
